Urf Day 2012 is Coming!

Summoners!
Those of you who are veteran members of the League know that April 1st marks the commemoration of a tragic event in League of Legends history. On that fateful day in 2010, a dear friend was senselessly taken from all of us before his time. I’m talking, of course, about Urf the Manatee.

The Sad Tale of Urf the Manatee
On the very eve of what would have been his triumphant induction into the League of Legends , this brave prince amongst sea cows met with a most cruel fate at the hands of a diabolical werewolf! On his journey from the sea Urf was ambushed by Warwick, the Blood Hunter. An epic struggle ensued, but in the end it was wolf that triumphed over manatee, carrying off his aquatic adversary’s skin as a trophy!

In the wake of this most odious misdeed, summoners of the League banded together to support one another during this trying time. The outpouring of affection for this brave, young manatee was tremendous, and hundreds of summoners put their creative talents to work memorializing his awful fate . The Urf Warwick skin also became one of the best-selling skins in the League history, with the proceeds going to benefit the Save the Manatee Club in memory of this paragon of sea cow glory.

Now that Urf Day is drawing closer, we will once again join together in the tradition of honoring this brave, young manatee. Put your creative talents to work memorializing the sacrifice of Urf, the Manatee, and you could win an IP boost! For inspiration, here are some of the most tearful tributes from the previous year .

Urf’s Triumphant Return!
Lost, but never forgotten, summoners of the League had suspected that this might be the end for Urf, the Manatee, until the end of March 2011 – when he teamed up with Corki, the Daring Bombardier, forming the duo of Urfrider Corki !

Through the magic of GANK Industries, Urf and Corki were able to join forces and return to the Fields of Justice much to the delight of manatee enthusiasts everywhere! But with the eve of Urf Day 2012 fast approaching, all the denizens of Valoran have gathered together in anticipation. After his unexpected revival in 2011, where could Urf, the Manatee, be popping up next?

NA Power Rankings Issue #3

With the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship finished, it’s time for Average Gatsby to reevaluate which North American teams are on top. Like the European editions of Power Rankings, I decided to add in a few up and coming teams who haven’t gotten the spotlight that most of the teams currently in the top eight have. Since the IntelEM World Championship was the most recent Challenger Circuit event, I weighed that event more heavily than any other event.

1. Dignitas
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 3rd
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 2nd at the IntelEM World Championship

As the top performing North American team at IntelEM Hanover and second place finisher overall, Dignitas has reassumed their throne as the top North American team, a title they haven’t held since their victory at IPL 3. With IPL 4 just around the corner, Dignitas looks like a clear frontrunner going into that event. A tip for teams up against Dignitas: Beware of MVP of Hanover Voyboy’s Lee Sin.

2. Counter Logic Gaming
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 1st
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 3rd at the IntelEM World Championship

Counter Logic Gaming put on an impressive performance at the IntelEM World Championship, narrowly losing to Moscow Five in the semifinals. The team has been living together and competing in the Korean Champions tournament and although they’ve had some mixed results online, CLG has always performed well at live events and will be contenders at IPL 4.

3. Curse
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 5th
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 5th at the IntelEM World Championship

Though the match wasn’t streamed, Curse vs. Moscow Five in the group stage at the IntelEM World Championship was the closest Moscow Five ever came to defeat in the tournament. With star player Pobelter able to attend IPL 4, Curse might finally be in a position to take a top three spot at a Challenger Circuit event.

4. Team SoloMid
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 2nd
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 7th at the IntelEM World Championship

After their crushing defeat in the group stage at the IntelEM World Championship and the departure of The Rain Man from the team, things looked bleak for Team SoloMid fans. However, with the addition of their new coach and Dyrus replacing The Rain Man, the team looks strong in practice. Team SoloMid will have to prove the changes have been worth it at IPL 4.

5. V8 eSports
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 6th
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 7th at IntelEM New York

V8 eSports put on an impressive performance during the IPL 4 qualifiers, taking first place over Against All Authority and earning the 5th seed in the tournament. V8 has been competing online fairly regularly and might be in a position for an upset at IPL 4.

6. Epik
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 4th
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 2nd at MLG Providence

While the recent roster change to Team SoloMid might help the team, Epik’s roster changes don’t look like much of an improvement, having at best mixed results in recent practice matches. With ClakeyD and Mashme replacing Dan Dinh and Dyrus only a few weeks before IPL 4, the team will have put in serious practice to get ready for that event.

7. mTw.NA (formerly A Picture of a Goose)
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 6th
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: Qualified for IntelEM Kiev (Could not attend)

The team formerly known as Goose missed out on both the IntelEM World Championship and IPL 4, but they haven’t slowed down their relentless quest for number one on the North American Ranked Teams ladder and playing in online tournaments. Now that the team has got a sponsor in mTw, they’ll have better chances of making it to future live events regardless of location.

8. Team Legion (Formerly RFLX)
  • Current Challenger Circuit Rank: 9th
  • Most Recent Challenger Circuit Result: 4th at MLG Providence

Another missing Challenger Circuit team from IPL 4, Team LGN has nonetheless continued to perform well in online events. Their recent Prized Event victories include the most recent go4lol and the NESL Premier League Qualifying finals, so it seems like only a matter of time before Legion makes it to another Challenger Circuit event.

Up and Comers:

4Not: The addition of Dan Dinh to the team appears to have produced some positive results, in addition to a significant boost in popularity for this long-running but relatively unknown team.

Choppa in Da Car: Choppa has been quietly winning Prized Events for a long time, but with their recent impressive performances during the IPL Killing Spree, this team might be on the verge of a breakout.

Monomaniac eSports: Monomaniac looked extremely strong in their games against Moscow Five in the IPL 4 qualifiers, but with their recent roster changes, as well as getting crushed by Curse in the 3rd/4th place match, their win against Moscow Five may have been more determined by unequal ping than anything else.

With seven North American teams headed to IPL 4, all eyes will be watching to find the best in the region. The action starts April 6th, so be sure to check out the League of Legends competitive site for the latest updates and live coverage from the event.

Agree? Disagree? As always, let us know who you think the best teams in North America are on the forums.

League of Legends World Tour - North America

The birthplace of Riot Games and first League of Legends community to open its doors, North America is where the international phenomenon began. What started as only a handful of developers in a small office building in Los Angeles, California has since grown to an organization of over 500 employees with offices in the United States, Ireland and Korea.
As one of the first to Western titles to fully embrace a free-to-play model, League of Legends had a lot to prove to a North American market accustomed to retail games played on console systems. Since launch, however, players have become so passionate about the game that friend referrals are now the most commonly reported reason that a North American player begins their career as a summoner. LAN centers and colleges across the nation often host competitive and social events centered on the game. Just this past week, schools like Michigan State and Michigan Tech kicked off their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with a League of Legends meetup.

Like many other places in the world, the North American League of Legends fan community also chooses to show their dedication to the community by producing huge volumes of fan content such as videos, songs, comics, statuettes, cosplay and artwork. These incredible works of art often achieve viral success on the League of Legends forums and through other social networks, and are sometimes featured as part of the Summoner Showcase. North America is also home to some of the oldest and most popular fansites in the League of Legends community. Sites such as SoloMid.net, MobaFire and the League of Legends Wiki all began early on in North Amercia, and have been helping to serve the community ever since.

The competitive scene in the United States and Canada is home to some of the most famous League of Legends teams in the global community, including Team Solo Mid, Counter Logic Gaming, Curse Gaming, Epik and Dignitas. Although there are few professional eSports organizations in North America, many of these teams have seized the opportunity to show impressive entrepreneurial spirit, acquiring their own sponsors and starting successful websites and live streaming programs.

The streams of celebrity players such as HotshotGG, saintvicious, the Rain Man or ReginaId often reach international audiences and viewership numbers in the tens of thousands. These players have fan communities of their very own and often help educate new players through guides and tutorials. North America is even home to the first professional League of Legends gaming house, where the players from Team Solo Mid live and practice together as a team.
This dedication to professional eSports has catapulted many North American teams into the spotlight on the international stage. Teams like Counter Logic Gaming, Curse Gaming and Team Solo Mid have been perennial competitors in prestigious tournaments across the globe, capturing titles in Europe and Asia as well as on their home soil. Several teams from North America were even invited to participate in the first international tournament to take place in Korea!

North America may be the birthplace of Riot Games, but there are still more places to visit on the League of Legends World Tour! Stay tuned for more on all the unique cultures that make up the international League of Legends community.

Moscow Five Changes the Face of League Play

We’re witnessing a sea change in League of Legends professional play. With two stunning tournament victories – topped by their perfect run to the IEM trophy at Hannover – Moscow Five has elevated the game to the next level. Beyond their raw skill, solid preparation and crack timing contributed greatly to their dominating win. They arrived in Hannover ten days early to prepare for the match and it showed on the field. Other teams are beginning to realize that they must push themselves further in order to compete with the best.

One of the most heavily affected by this revelation is Team Epik, which has witnessed a recent exodus in members following the Hannover tournament. Epik first emerged shortly before the NA Regionals back in Season One and immediately made an impact. Founder and leader Dan Dinh led his crew Dyrus, Doublelift, Salce, and Westrice to a second-place finish in the Season One Regionals. That earned them a spot in the Season One Championship, where they placed a respectable fourth. While Doublelift left shortly thereafter for Team Curse (replaced by Nhat Nyguen), the remaining players formed a consistent core upon which Epik could build.

Following Moscow Five’s domination at Hannover, that changed. Following a disagreement about practice habits and strategies for improvement, SoloMid member Rainman left the team. SoloMid immediately recruited Epik’s Dyrus to fill in the gap. Dyrus shared a house with members of SoloMid, and both SoloMid and Epik share common roots on AON, so the replacement made sense. It also left Team Epik one man down… which became two men down several days later, when Dinh himself left Team Epik. Both Dinh and Dyrus had been serious League of Legends players – active since beta testing and with a substantial fan following – and created a significant hole in Team Epik’s roster. ClakyDeeee and DontMashMe quickly filled out the roster, but it remains to be seen how quickly the new team can gel. Dinh soon joined up-and-coming team 4Not, which has already seen improved results since adding Dan to the team.

Nor has Team Epik been the only team to feel the shift. After Dyrus joined the team, SoloMid acquired a coach to help them up their game – one who cites Sun Tzu in public postings and states an intention to implement curfews and eating regimens onto the team. If it sounds crazy, remember that SoloMid experienced Moscow Five’s tactics first-hand in Kiev and again in Hannover; they recognize the challenge that faces them… and every other competitive team on the circuit.

The concept of living together in shared accommodations takes on an increased focus in this equation. SoloMid’s new coach shares living space with them, as did Dyrus, whose familiarity with them presumably helped him function more efficiently as a teammate. In Korea, Counter Logic Gaming and FnaticRaidCall received invitations from OnGameNet to practice at their gaming house. The impact of such a move comes hand-in-hand with other factors, but there’s no question that living and playing together in the same quarters demonstrates an increased focus on performance. Much the way a professional baseball or football team lives and trains together in order to increase their effectiveness, League teams now look to work more cohesively as a unit.

The full impact has yet to be seen, but the shifts in these top-ranked teams indicate that many of them have come to the same conclusion. With their dominating play, Moscow Five may have heralded an end to the “casual professional” on the League of Legends circuit. Only serious teams, who devote time and resources to honing their skills, can withstand the heat on the battlefield. Fans can expect to see the action grow even more intense, with top teams executing more complex strategies and honing their timing to lethal levels. It’s a whole new game out there! Expect to feel the impact of Moscow Five’s wins for some time to come.
