Summoners!
Quite a lot has happened this week in the world of League of Legends eSports, from huge upsets at the North American IEM Kiev Qualifier to an astonishing win for team ALTERNATE at the German ESL Pro Series. And with WCG still currently underway, there will be plenty more to keep your eye on in the next few days. Let’s take a look at eSports happenings for the week.
Team SoloMid, Dignitas, and Goose Qualify for IEM
There was a lot of anticipation surrounding the North American IEM Kiev Qualifiers. With Global Challenge Kiev serving as the final opportunity to qualify for the IEM World Championship in Hannover, the competition was fierce. It was all-in for the eight teams that were competing, and – in usual League of Legends fashion—the result was a huge surprise, with CLG getting knocked out early after losing to both v8 eSports and Curse gaming. Despite this difficult loss in the qualifier, they’ve already qualified for the IEM Season Championship in Hannover, and will have the opportunity to redeem themselves when they get to Germany.
Epik gaming also met with an unfortunate end after being forced to forfeit their first round due to an unprepared player. Their second round didn’t go any better, and after being forced to field an alternate they faced elimination by Goose.
But it was Goose, who absolutely stole the show. Despite being knocked to the losers’ bracket by Team Dignitas, Goose was able to grind through 15 grueling games to secure third place. With the qualifiers now officially over, the teams on their way to IEM Kiev are Team SoloMid, Dignitas, Goose, White Lotus (representing the Ukraine), mTw, aAa, Empire and Invictus Gaming (representing China).
ALTERNATE defeats Acer at the ESL Pro Series finals
The ESP Pro Series Finals was held live in Cologne, Germany this past weekend. This German-only Prized Event was a showdown between ALTERNATE, Acer, Game!de and peculiar gaming who had all been competing for months over the course of the season. Ultimately, the up and coming Team ALTERNATE brought home the top prize after an exciting series of matches.
WCG Grand Finals Group Stage Complete
From across the world, 18 teams have come to compete in Busan, Korea for a chance at a $25,000 first prize and international recognition. As one of the largest Prized Events this season, many well-known pro League of Legends players have shown up in hopes of winning the prize. After two days of competition, the group stage is over and the quarter finalists have been decided. All three North American teams, Dignitas and CDE, representing the United States, and CLG, representing Canada have moved on to the quarter finals. For Europe, Gameburg, representing Poland, and Team France have advanced. Finally in Asia, Flash from Singapore, EDG from Korea, and iG from China have all qualified.
